How Many Toxins Do You Own?

Have a look in your cupboard and bathroom and see how many of these ingredients/toxins you find.
 
ALDEHYDES
Often used in perfumes and preservatives which is toxic and a volatile substance which can cause allergic reaction.
 
ALGINATES
Is a synthetic chemical used in cosmetics as  binders and emulsifiers which causes many allergic reactions.
 
 ALPHA-HYDROXY ACIDS
AHA or fruit acids, including glycolic, lactic and citris acid, they are used in bath and shower products, anti-aging and face and body products. Used as exfoliants and PH balancers. This may cause skin irritation, photosensitivity to sunlight and increase risk to sun related skin disorders and skin cancer.
 
ALUMINUM CHEMICALS
In cosmetics there are chemical ingredients that contain aluminum avoid this as it can impair cognitive function
 
BENZY  ALCOHOL
The Material Data Safety Sheet ( MSDS)  says it is a skin irritant , potentially causing redness and pain irritating, as well as eye irritant.
Prolong or repeated exposure can cause allergies. It also warns that it may be toxic to the liver and central nervous system.
 
BHA AND BHT
Are synthetic antioxidants and should be avoided
 
2-BROMO-2-NITROPROPANE-1 and 3-DIOL
This is a synthetic chemical used as preservative and solvent and should be avoided causing allergic reaction
 
BUTYLATED HYDROXY ANISOLE (BTA) and BHT
It is a synthetic antioxidant used in foods and cosmetics and should be avoided which may cause allergic reaction to the skin and may interfere with hormone function.
 
CETYLE ALCOHOL
The Material Data Safety Sheet( MSDS)states that it causes mild to moderate skin irritation and mild eye irritation. Inhalation may cause respiratory tract irritation. Ingested may cause hypermotility and diarrhea. May also affect cardiosvascular system, respiration and behavior/central nervous system(tremor,ataxia)
 
CETEARETH-20
This is a TOXIC INGREDIENT commonly found in a number of skin care products this chemical ingredient is a mix of cetyl and stearyl alcohol and ethylene oxide.
The cosmetics researches are considering this to be moderate to severe health hazard. This is highly unsafe especially used on irritated and damaged skin.
Studies have shown that this chemical ingredient is potentially contaminated with Ethlylene Oxide and 1,4-dioxane(  known to have cancer causing substance).

CARBOMER 934 & 40
A resin used to thicken stabilise and prevent freeze damage to cosmetics. This is toxic and can have allergic reaction.
 
CARMINE
It is an insect based ingredient. Crushed beetles to be specific. It is used for colour instead of FD& C Coal Tar derived ingredients which are considered toxic. Vegans and those with allergies or sensitive to insects should stay clear of Carmine.
 
CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOS
Is a sodium salt of the polcarboxymethyl ester of the cellulose it is used to provide consistent viscosity  in cosmetic creams and in some food items.   The Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose. The Material Safety Data Sheet( MSDS) states it is slightly hazardous in contact with eyes may cause  eye irritation.
In contact with skin may cause skin irritation.
Ingested may cause irritation of the digestive tract.
Inhalation may cause respiratory tract irritation.
 
CETEARYL ALCOHOL
When produced synthetically it is less expensive and has slight toxicty
 
CETEARETH-20

COCOMIDE DEA
Other names used are : Cocamide MEA, Dea-Cetyl Phosphate, Lauramid DEA, DEA Oleth-3Phosphate, Lauramide DEA, Linoleamide MEA, Myristamide DEA, Oleamide DEA, Stearamide MEA, TEA-Lauryl Sulfate, Triethanolamine. These are used in cosmetics and in foaming cleaning agent and are carcinogenic causing allergic reactions and dryness to hair and skin. TOXIC AVOID
 
COCOMIAD PROPYL BETAINE
Used in cosmetics and in foaming cleaning agent and are carcinogenic causing allergic reactions and dryness to hair and skin. TOXIC AVOID
 
D&C COLOURS AND FD&C COLOURS
These artificial colours are synthetic, petrolium derived even though they are approved by the FDA in some countries these colours have been banned or withdrawn. They are toxic and dangerous so best avoid them.
 
EDTA (Ethylenedinitrilo)
Used in cosmetics, personal care products , bar soaps, shampoo and conditioners and paint thinners.
Ingredients bind to metal ions which prevents deterioration of products and fragrances.
This is a synthetic chemical and is TOXIC and is best to avoid.
 
FRAGRANCE (PARFUM)
Usually listed as fragrance or parfum often used to to mask the scent of other ingredients or to make the product more appealing.
Fragrance is added to most personal care products on the market. A large % of fragrances are synthetic derived of petroleum.
This mixture of synthetic scent  is associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and possibly effect on the reproductive system.
Avoid petrolium derived fragrances and go for natural plant derived.
 
FORMALDEHYDE
Other names to look for are: FORMALIN, DMDM hydantoin , Diazolidinyl urea, Imidazolidinyl urea , Bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol), 5-Bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane, Hydroxymethylglycinate. This is used as a preservative, fungicide to reduce bacteria in solutions. Best avoid TOXIC
 
GLYCOLS
Propylene glycol, Polyethylene glyco, Butylene Glycol.
Very commonly used in hair care products, moisturisers, sunscreen and also used in foods as food additive to give flavour.
Most glycols are derived from petroleum and synthetic products and are TOXIC avoid using this substance
 
IMADAZOLINDINYL UREA
Is an anti-bacterial agent used in cosmetics to prolong the shelf life.
This may cause allergic reaction and skin rashes.
 
ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL

Is a petroleum compound with a strong odour and is very irritating on the eyes and drying on the skin.

 
ISOPROPYL MYRISTATE
Is a synthetic oil widely used in cosmetics it is absorbed by the skin  and lessens the greasy nature of cosmetics.
It may cause allergic reaction and could aggravate skin condition such as acne.
 
ISOPROPYL PALMITATE & LANOLATE
Is synthetic and used in cosmetics as a thickening agent its main function is to make products feel soft and look shiny.
It can deprive the skin of nutrients the pores can become clogged and healthy skin cells can die causing premature aging.
 
LAURAMIDE DEA
Used to build lather and thicken various cosmetic products.This product is partly natural and partly synthetic used in dishwashing detergent for it’s grease cutting ability.
This can be drying to the hair and can cause an allergic reaction.
 
METHYL PARABEN, PROPYL PARABEN, BUTYL PARABEN
Parabens are placed in cosmetics , shampoos, deodorant and personal care products to extend the shelf life.
Parabens can interfere with hormonal function and when applying on the skin it reacts with UVB leading to increase skin aging and DNA damage.
TOXIC synthetic chemical do not use.
 
MINERAL OIL
Other names are Liquidum paraffinum, Paraffin oil, Paraffin wax,  Petrolium. White mineral oil.
Mineral oil is a by-product just like motor oil which is composed by hydrogen and carbon. Mineral oil clogs the pores like a liquid plastic and it can interfere with the skin to eliminate toxins and may cause premature aging or even promoting acne and other allergic reactions this is also a main ingredient in baby oil. It would be wise to avoid products that include mineral oil, the allergic reaction can be quite serious.
 
OLEYL BETAINE
Is a synthetic surfactant used to reduce static in cosmetics, shampoos and hair lotion which is TOXIC and can cause dysfunctional growth of skin cells.
 
PEG (POLYETHELENE GLYCOL)
Peg is a petroleum base-compounds found in cosmetics, baby wipes, lotions, toothpaste, shampoos and deodorant and food products.
Peg is a carsinogenic material that will dry out and make your skin age faster.
Avoid all products with the letters PEG it is TOXIC and allergic reaction can occur.
 
PROPYLENE GLYCOL STEARATE
Combination of petroleum derives , carbon salts and vegetables alcohol derivatives.
Used as an emulsifier in cosmetics.can cause allergic reaction, skin rashes and could be toxic when absorbed into the body.
 
PHENOXYETHANOL
Phenoxethanol is a glycol ether. Glycols are a series of chemicals that find their way into things like paints, lacquer, jet fuel.
Phenoxythanol is used as an anti-bacterial in cosmetics.
This ingredient is widely used as a Preservative in a range of all  natural products and cosmetics.
The Material Safety Data Sheet ( MSDS) states that it is harmful if swallowed or absorbed through the skin and that it can cause reproductive damage.
AVOID this product.
 
PROPYLENE GLYCOL
It is usually a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humecant and used in cosmetics to achieve a gliding feeling.
It is also claimed to weaken skin protein and it to cause brain, liver and kidneys abnormalities.
It is also used in  anti-freeze. Avoid !
 
RETINYL PALMITATE AND RETINOL (Vitamin A)
Found in anti-aging and blemish control skin care.
A nutrient that may damage DNA and speed the growth of skin tumors when used topically.
Reports are very mixed on this though.
 
SILICONE
Derived emollient used to make products feel soft.
These do not break down clogging the pores from breathing causing skin irritation .
 
SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE, SODIUM SULFATE, SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE
These are synthetic  substances (detergents) used in everything from body washers, hand cleaners, shampoos and toothpaste putting you at risk.
Sulfate can irritate the skin and eyes putting you at risk. These substances are frequently disguised as natural cosmetics. Don’t be fooled with the parenthetic explanation “comes with coconut”.
AVOID all products with SLS etc. It is really carcinogen.
 
STEARIC ACIDS
A white waxy, fatty acid and tallow, butter acids, animal fats or vegetable oils.
It is used in cosmetic creams for the pearliness and firmness provided.
Allergic reactions to this chemical are common.
 
SODIUM HYDROXMETHLYLGLYCINATE
BE aware as some cosmetics company describe this ingredient as organic or natural derived from glycine an amino acid.
This is far from the truth as this ingredient goes through a common manufacturing process of chemicals sometimes FORMALDEHYDE is used during manufacturing. This can course eye irritation and skin so if you have sensitive skin AVOID.
